Introduction

New Ross is a thriving town and port on the River Barrow. The N25 from Cork to Rosslare currently passes through the heart of the town causing congestion and stifling growth.

In an operation to improve the current situation and to provide for the future, Wexford County Council and Kilkenny County Council, together with their Consultants Mott MacDonald (Ewbank Preece O hEocha), have been engaged in determining the preferred route of a New Ross Bypass and Second River Crossing. That preferred route, which is illustrated on this web page, will provide significant benefits to New Ross and its surrounding areas as well as to the users of the N25 national primary route.

Previous Public consultations were held in the Brandon House Hotel in New Ross in March and July 2000. Taking into account comments from these public consultations together with further studies into each corridor, a Preferred Route has now been identified.

Why the improvement is necessary

The N25 through New Ross is a key commercial and tourist route to the South East. Improving this route is part of the Government's National Development Plan to achieve sustainable economic growth.

Currently the N25 travels along speed limited sections on the approaches to the town and through the town. There are many junctions and interfaces with other national, regional and county roads. These together with entrances to businesses and dwellings lead to unacceptable tailbacks occurring at peak times. All of this makes life unnecessarily difficult for local people, businesses, tourists and through-traffic.

The bypass will remove through-traffic from New Ross leaving a pleasant environment for residents and tourists and will encourage the growth of the town. A bypass will lead to safer conditions for drivers and pedestrians in the town and will improve local access. A bypass will result in a quicker and more predictable journey for both local and through traffic.

What happens next?

The preferred route shown has been designed sufficiently to ensure it is a practical scheme, further design work, especially on receipt of comments from the current consultation, may result in changes in the precise line of the route.

The next stage will involve an Environmental Impact Assessment and preliminary design of the preferred route. This stage will include the various necessary Statutory Procedures (including CPO and Bridge Orders). These Statutory Procedures will include the normal public consultation/participation.
