The N8 Cashel to Mitchelstown forms part of the South West Corridor that links Limerick and Cork to Dublin. The route has been identified in the National Roads Needs Study 1998 and the National Development Plan (2000-2006) as one of strategic importance and is to be upgraded to dual carriageway/motorway standard.

Halcrow Barry Consulting Engineers have been appointed by Tipperary (SR) County Council to recommend a preferred route and thereafter to provide management and design services to enable the construction of the scheme. Tramore House are Project Managers for the scheme.

The study area was put on display in Cashel, Cahir and Ballyporeen in October 2000. The purpose of the display was to receive the views of the public and to utilise local knowledge of the study area in developing scheme proposals. Subsequently, in late January/early February 2001, a number of route corridors were put on display. These route corridors were possible solutions that were being brought forward for further consideration following initial traffic, environmental and engineering studies.

A further public consultation took place on 26th, 27th and 28th June 2001 to display the preferred route. The Route Selection Report was finalised in September 2001 and that report recommends a route to Tipperary (SR) County Council. This route is shown on the map.
