The N8 Cashel By-Pass forms part of the South West Corridor that links Cork to Dublin. The route has been identified in the National Roads Needs Study 1998 and the National Development Plan (2000-2006) as one of strategic importance and is to be upgraded to dual carriageway/motorway standard.

This scheme will eliminate the traffic bottleneck of Cashel Town and will remove significant levels of heavy goods vehicles from the centre of the town. Part of the scheme involves the construction of a new N74 Link which will remove the by-passing traffic from entering the town. The route of the by-pass will pass approximately 0.75 Km to the east of Cashel town.

The scheme was designed by the road design section of South Tipperary Co Co. A Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) was published in early 2000 and was confirmed by An Bord Pleanala in October 2001. Notices of confirmation of the CPO have been issued to individual landowners. The CPO became operative on 27th December 2001.

Tramore House were requested in late 2000 to prepare documents for the pre-qualification of tenderers and also contract documents for this scheme as a Design & Build project. The tender documents were completed and approved by the NRA in July of 2001. Five contractors have been pre-qualified for this scheme and Tender documents have been issued.

The tenders are due for return to Tipperary SR Co Co in April 2002.

Notices to Treat have been issued to approximately half of the landowners affected. The remaining landowners will be issued with Notice to Treat in June, 2002.

Pre-Contract work has commenced. The first phase of archaeological excavations has been carried out and the second phase will be completed by the end of this year. Further works in relation to the diversion of services will be carried out in the Autumn. A supplementary Site Investigation commenced in June and will be completed by early July.
